THIS week’s primary hockey gala days at Tamworth Hockey Association’s Hockey Complex served many purposes.

The gala days enabled the Tamworth Zone schools the chance to play State PSSA Hockey Knockout matches all at one time and find a district champion in girls’ and boys’ hockey to play Armidale’s Ben Venue Public School in regional finals.

The winners of those regional finals will then play an inter- regional final against the North Coast region’s best.

Tamworth Public School prevailed in both gala days, the girls winning out on Tuesday and the boys, coached by Graeme McKenzie, on Wednesday.

While there were outstanding matches, most notably Wednesday’s triple-time thriller between unlucky Timbumburi and Tamworth Public, it also gave the primary students from around the district the chance to play on the international synthetic surfaces.

Timbumburi assistant principal, Andrew McDonald, also doubles as the North West PSSA boys’ coach and gala day organiser and was delighted with the efforts and performances of all the pre-teens.

It was more than just a State PSSA Hockey knockout decider too.

“Every team plays at least two matches,” he told The Leader.

“Teams like Gunnedah and Moree don’t have a surface at home so they get to experience playing on the surface.

“Probably half the children playing haven’t played on the surface so it’s a good chance to let them play on it and maybe they will come back.”
