The council are inviting the community to attend a community forum this Sunday May 22 from 2:30pm to discuss the budget draft and to provide feedback and concerns.For the2016/17 draft budget, Kingston District Council has proposedto increase rates by 3 per cent.

Council says the key driver for this proposed increase is the State Government’s recent decision to impose a rubble royalty tax on councils who raise road rubble.

As a result, the councilsays it is required to find an additional $50,000 each year to ensure its road network continues to be maintained at the same standard.

Council says it also plans to continue usingcapital value and a differential rating system, based on Urban, Rural Living and Rural localities, to raise rates.

Council says this rating system recognises the differing levels of service and infrastructure that respective localities have access to.

Urban properties generally have far greater access to bitumised roads, public lighting, footpaths and cycle tracks.

As such, council says itproposes to recognise these differences by applying a rate in the dollar discount of 18.7% for Rural Living properties and 24.2% for Rural properties, when compared to the Urban rate in the dollar.

Continued delivery of Council’s asset maintenance programEngagement of an engineer to implement a new Asset Management SystemUpgrade of main street lightingConstruction of rock wall to protect Wyomi Beach (subject to State funding)Delivery of the first stage of the main street upgrade projectMayor Reg Lyon said “the diversity of these projects will ensure all corners of our district benefit and that the quality of our lives continues to improve.”
