NDIS PROVIDER: Dungog and District Neighbourcare’s general manager Cherylin Brown is looking forward to helping clients with the new scheme.Dungog and District Neighbourcare is now an approved provider of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) being rolled out in this area on July 1.

The NDIS is a new way of providing support for people living with disability.

It’s a whole-of-life approach – a major reform of disability services in Australia, designed to provide the right support according to each person’s needs and goals.

The scheme replaces the old system of blockfunds going to the organisations that providesupport.

Instead, eligible people are assessed and allocated funding on an individual basis.

The idea is that everyone’s support needs are different and that each person can exercise choice and control over whichservices and supportthey receive.

Neighbourcare’sgeneralmanager Cherylin Brown said the organisation waslooking forward to the roll out of the NDIS in Dungog.

“This is an opportunity foradditionalsupport staff to work in this area also,” she said.

“It is a very exciting time for us and means we can expandto provide additional support services in our area.

“It will be good for the Dungog area.

“It’s an opportunity for people with a disability to be more independent.

“They will have a choice of whatsupportservices they want to purchasefrom us and can be as independent as they wish.”

Participants will meet with a planner, completetheir assessment andreceive apersonal NDIS plan.

Once theirplan is agreed, the organisation works with the participantto develop the plan, ensuring theyhave choice and control over how it is delivered. No two plans are the same.

The services provided can evolve over time as the participant’sneeds change.

Theaim of NDIS, which was launched in the Hunter in 2013,is to deliver solutions that really workand to assist people to live theirlife to the fullest.A meeting to explain the new service will be held from 9.30am to 11.30am on Tuesday, May 31 at the Uniting Church Hall in Dowling Street Dungog.
